Services
I offer website and graphic design services; you can find real-life examples of both in my portfolio. If you've made it to this page, though, you're probably looking for more details — what is it like to work with me? What kind of process do I use? What will I be expecting from you? If you still have questions after reading through the information below, send me an e-mail and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
Website design
My favourite kind of website project is when I get to work with you from start to finish, from the first pencil sketches right up to launch day. Realistically, I know that's not always possible, so I'm also happy to tighten up and improve an existing design, finish the job that another designer started, create a static design that someone else will implement, or work with a fellow designer/developer on one or more stages of your project. I do play well with others!
Design & Development
- Initial planning stage where we'll talk about your existing branding, font and colour preferences, target audience, website goals, content, competitors and more. Following this discussion I'll provide you with a detailed quote and project scope proposal.
- Test site creation that is live and password-protected so only you can access it. Here I'll use all of the information gathered during the planning stage to set up a "first draft" of your website. I do this because a live site — unlike a static Photoshop mockup — lets you interact with your website in the same way that your users will. If the planning stage seems overwhelming, don't worry: the test site is your chance to solidify what you really want. It's usually easier to discover what you don't like once it's in front of you, than to visualise what you do want without something concrete to work from.
- Test site revisions until you're completely satisfied, and thorough testing for all of the -idities — that is, ensuring that your site's HTML and CSS complies with current standards (code validity), that it looks great and works in all browsers from Mac to Windows to handheld devices (cross-browser functionality), that everything works as it should (usability), and that your content is barrier-free for all types of users (accessibility).
- Training in how to update and edit your site, whether I've built it on a content management system like WordPress or in basic HTML and CSS. I don't use intimidating jargon and I've been teaching non-technical people how to code for years, so you'll be in in good hands.
Implementation
- Assistance with hosting and domain name providers; choosing a new one or transferring from an old one, as well as all the potential complications that can arise from either of those. I've used a lot of different providers and can help make sure you're getting the features you'll need for your site to work optimally.
- Launching the site from your own domain and dealing with any issues that come up immediately following the launch.
Updating
- Post-launch updating of your website's content on an ongoing basis, if you'd prefer me to do it. I love empowering my clients to update their own sites, but I also understand when it's not feasible; you do have a business to run, after all! I'm also available to help more intermittently, such as with a larger content overhaul or complicated change.
- Assistance learning new features and/or refreshing your knowledge of how to use the site. If a major update to your content management system or a long time away from your website's interface has you struggling, I'm more than happy to help you get back on track.
- Upgrading the site's structure based on your changing needs over time, because nothing in life is static and the same should be true for your website. Technology is constantly changing and I'm always learning, too; a few years down the line an upgrade or two might be in order.
