About Linn

LinnTwo defining facts about me: I'm half Canadian and half Norwegian, including being raised equally in both countries, and I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University in the University of Toronto, with a specialist in Theatre Design & Production and a minor in English literature.

I made my first "website" (I use that term loosely) in Microsoft Publisher '97 in 1998, and then progressed through a series of drag-and-drop site building programs. Around 2005 I ventured into the world of hand-written code and stylesheets, and haven't looked back since. I was entirely self-taught until recently; I'm currently working towards a Web Design & Development recognition from the Chang School at Ryerson University.

I like nib pens, CSS, tea, beautiful typography, cats, and raw code. I'm not too fond of chalk pastels, blue cheese, table-based layouts, student loans, or runny papier-mâché. I consider myself incredibly lucky that what started as a nerdy hobby turned out to be a marketable skill.

Norwegian Forresten — om du foretrekker å skrive på norsk, er det helt greit!

About Drollic

droll·ic adj. Of or pertaining to a droll or puppet-show [rare, 18th cent.]

So what do websites have to do with puppets? Puppet shows strive to be visually interesting and engage their audiences, but backstage it's crucial that the strings are organised, easy to use and highly functional in the hands of the puppet master.

Similarly, it's essential that your website is attractively laid out and engages your visitors, but it's equally important that its code is clean, standards-compliant and built on a system that puts you, the website owner, entirely in control once your site launches.

And why "useful design"? The basic definition of design includes both the look and function of an object, but all too often one of the two is sacrificed for the sake of the other. I strive to build things that are well designed in both senses of the word: visually and functionally.
